Lao Cai province's transport infrastructure

In recent years, the transport infrastructure in Lao Cai province has made many breakthroughs and developed strongly, creating a new look for the land at the northern border gateway. The transport infrastructure is synchronized from urban to rural areas with a series of key projects along with expressways, national highways, provincial roads, district roads, inter-commune, inter-village and hamlet roads in the province that have been invested in, upgraded, renovated, repaired and maintained, contributing to ensuring security, political tasks, social order and safety, strengthening the potential of the national defense, building a defense posture to protect the fatherland, promoting trade, and sustainable socio-economic development for the locality.

Road:

In Lao Cai province there are currently:

- 01 expressway (Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway) runs through with a length of 152.67km; has a scale of 2-4 lanes; has 08 intersections in operation and use (IC12, IC13, IC14, IC16, IC17, Phu Lu intersection, IC18, IC19.

- 09 National Highways (QL70, QL32, QL32C, QL37, QL2D, QL4, 4D, 4E, 279) run through with a total length of 944km. National Highways are of grade V - III mountainous scale, the road surface structure is mainly asphalt concrete (over 800km), asphalt (over 100km).

- 27 provincial roads (DT.151, DT.151B, DT.151C, DT.152, DT.152B, DT.153, DT.154, DT.155, DT.156, DT.156B, DT.157, DT.158, DT.159, DT.160, DT.161, DT.162, DT.163, DT.164, DT.165, DT.166, DT.170, DT.171, DT.172, DT.173, DT.174, DT.175, DT.175B) with a total length of 1,425km. Provincial roads are of grade V - III mountainous scale; the road surface structure is 76.1km of cement concrete; 790km of asphalt concrete; 495.6km of asphalt; crushed stone is 19.1km and dirt road is 44.5km.

- Urban roads, rural roads, village roads, specialized roads, border patrol roads have a total length of 16,516km. Nearly 90% of the road surface has been solidified, the rest is dirt road.

Waterway: 

In Lao Cai province, there are 2 main inland waterways:

- The inland waterway route on the Red River (Thao River) is 240km long. This is a national inland waterway route managed and maintained by the Vietnam Maritime and Waterways Administration, specializing in transporting agricultural, forestry and mineral products from Lao Cai to Phu Tho province, Hanoi city and Hai Phong port. Currently, 21km (from Km358, the border of Phu Tho province and Lao Cai province to Km379) is classified as level III technical, the terrain is relatively flat, the natural flow is favorable for water transport vehicles to operate; the section from Km379 to Nam Cang village, A Mu Sung commune is 219km long, classified as level IV technical, natural flow, with many rapids, shoals, dry season shallow water, flood season strong flow only suitable for small vehicles to travel.

- The waterway on Chay River and Thac Ba Lake is about 183km long; of which: the river section from Thac Ba dam to Cam Nhan (50km long) is classified as level III technical section of the national inland waterway managed by the Vietnam Maritime and Waterways Administration, the remaining sections are currently not classified as technical section of the local waterway managed by the province, with a length of 83km.

Railway:

Lao Cai province currently has about 211.2km of railway, including: 153.2km of the Hanoi - Lao Cai national railway, 1,000mm gauge, located on the Kunming - Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh economic corridor. This railway plays an important role in transporting goods and passengers between Yunnan province (China) and Vietnam through Lao Cai international border gate; 58km is a dedicated railway with 1,000mm gauge serving mineral transport, connecting Pho Lu station to Cam Duong Apatite mine and a branch from Xuan Giao station to Tang Loong ore processing plant.

Airway:

Currently, in Lao Cai province, there is 01 airport, a level 2 military airport (in Nam Cuong ward) managed and operated by Regiment 921, Air Defense - Air Force, Ministry of National Defense.

Bridge over the Red River:

Currently there are 18 large bridges crossing the Red River: Van Phu Bridge, Tuan Quan Bridge, Bach Lam Bridge, Yen Bai Bridge, Gioi Phien Bridge, Co Phuc Bridge, Mau A Bridge, Trai Hut Bridge, Ban Vuoc Bridge, Kim Thanh Bridge, Coc Leu Bridge, Pho Moi Bridge, Phu Thinh Bridge, Giang Dong Bridge, Lang Giang Bridge, Pho Lu Bridge (Railway), Pho Lu Bridge (Road), Bao Ha Bridge./.
