Irrigation infrastructure of Lao Cai province
Lao Cai is a mountainous province with a large agricultural production area, so the irrigation infrastructure system of Lao Cai province has received investment attention in recent years, gradually improving, meeting the requirements of agricultural production, natural disaster prevention and serving people's lives. Many lakes, dams, and canals have been newly built, upgraded and solidified, contributing to proactive irrigation water sources, improving crop productivity, and ensuring safety for downstream areas during the rainy season. This is an important foundation for Lao Cai to develop sustainable agriculture, associated with the goal of building new rural areas and adapting to climate change.

* Irrigation works
Currently, in Lao Cai province, there are a total of 5,885 irrigation works and clusters serving irrigation and water supply for 92,726.5 hectares of rice and crops in the province. Specifically:
- Pumping station projects: 37 projects.
- Dam works: 5,652 works.
- Length of existing canals and ditches and the proportion of reinforced canals: Total length: 9,154km, of which: length of reinforced canals and ditches is 6,269.8km (reaching 68.492%); the rest are small, unreinforced earthen canals and ditches, about 2,884.2km.
* Irrigation reservoir dam
There are 196 projects within the scope of regulation of Decree 114/2018/ND-CP dated September 4, 2018 of the Government, of which the preliminary classification is as follows: 13 large dams and reservoirs; 35 medium dams and reservoirs and 148 small dams and reservoirs; the remaining very small reservoirs are not within the scope of regulation.

* Rural domestic water
In recent years, with the attention of the Party and the State, Lao Cai province has invested in building many rural water supply projects using many capital sources such as the National Target Program on Clean Water and Environmental Sanitation, Programs 134, 135, 30a, New Rural Development, Decision 120, Decision 293, Sustainable Poverty Reduction, etc. These are important resources that have helped the province develop a system of rural water supply projects, thereby reducing diseases related to clean water and environmental sanitation, improving community health, improving living conditions, creating a green, clean, beautiful environment, the face of the countryside is increasingly prosperous, meeting the cultural and spiritual life of rural people, and the quality of life of rural people is increasingly improved.
By the end of 2024, the entire Lao Cai province (new) will have 193,320 rural domestic water supply works, of which:
- The number of centralized water supply works after review and liquidation in accordance with Circular 54/2013/TT-BTC dated May 4, 2013 of the Ministry of Finance on management, use and exploitation of rural clean water supply works is 1,118 works, supplying water to about 467,435 people;
- The number of small-scale water supply works is 192,202 small-scale works (dug wells, drilled wells, water springs, and troughs account for 70%, water tanks and reservoirs account for 30% of the number of works).
Lao Cai province's irrigation infrastructure system not only contributes to ensuring irrigation water sources and preventing natural disasters, but also creates a solid foundation for sustainable agricultural development and improving people's lives.
