Lao Cai Provincial Health Infrastructure
In recent years, the health infrastructure system of Lao Cai province has been invested in and gradually modernized to meet the increasing health care needs of the people. From the provincial level to the grassroots level, many hospitals, health centers, and commune health stations have been built and upgraded, with increasingly synchronized medical equipment. Along with that, the medical staff is regularly trained and fostered, contributing to improving the quality of medical examination and treatment, ensuring health care rights for people in remote, isolated, and border areas. This is an important foundation for Lao Cai to effectively carry out social security work and improve the quality of people's lives.

- Provincial state management agencies
The state management agency of Lao Cai province's health sector includes: Department of Health Office (including 8 functional departments: Office, Personnel Organization Department, Financial Planning Department, Medical Affairs Department, Pharmaceutical Affairs Department, Food Safety Department, Population and Children Department, Social Protection Department).
- Hospital and Medical Center System
Lao Cai province has 40 public service units under the Department of Health including: 16 Hospitals, 24 Medical Centers including:
+ 04 provincial general hospitals (General Hospital No. 1, General Hospital No. 2, General Hospital No. 3, General Hospital No. 4);
+ 04 specialized hospitals (Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Traditional Medicine Hospital, Endocrinology Hospital, Rehabilitation Hospital);
+ 08 regional general hospitals (Bac Ha, Bao Thang, Bao Yen, Bat Xat, Lao Cai, Muong Khuong, Simacai, Van Ban).
+ 07 provincial centers (Disease Control, Testing, International Health Quarantine, Medical Examination, Forensic Medicine, Social Work and Protection Center No. 1, Social Work and Protection Center No. 2);
+ 09 regional preventive medicine centers (Bac Ha, Bao Thang, Bao Yen, Bat Xat, Muong Khuong, Lao Cai, Van Ban, Sa Pa, Si Ma Cai).
+ 08 regional multifunctional medical centers (Luc Yen, Mu Cang Chai, Tram Tau, Tran Yen, Van Chan, Van Yen, Yen Bai, Yen Binh).
- Regional polyclinic system: Lao Cai province has 31 regional polyclinics under the multifunctional medical center and regional hospital.
- Medical Station System: Currently, 151 medical stations in the old Lao Cai area have been arranged into 48 new medical stations, under the authority of the People's Committees of communes and wards; 168 medical stations in the old Yen Bai area remain intact.
* Private healthcare system
Lao Cai province has 05 private hospitals: Truong Duc Hospital (150 GB), 103 Friendship General Hospital (150 GB), Hung Thinh General Hospital (95 GB), Hanoi - Yen Bai Eye Hospital (21 GB), Saigon - Lao Cai Eye Hospital (10 GB).
There are 21 general clinics, 398 specialist clinics and 94 other care facilities.
* Medical staff
The province's medical workforce as of June 2025 is 9,190 people, including 2,214 doctors (12.8 doctors/10,000 people), 462 university pharmacists (2.6 pharmacists/10,000 people). Specifically as follows:
- Health sector human resources: 7,453 (doctors: 1,748, university pharmacists: 301), of which: Provincial level has 2,315 people (1,051 doctors; 192 university pharmacists); commune level: 4,898 people (697 doctors; 109 university pharmacists).
- Other healthcare (private healthcare, military healthcare, army healthcare...): 1,737 doctors and pharmacists.
For village health workers
- Total number of village health workers: 2,221/2,346 (94.6%);
- Total number of village midwives: 196/2,346 (8.3%).
* Medical facilities
Infrastructure has been invested and gradually improved; 100% of public health facilities have been solidly built, modern, and are in good operating condition. Provincial General Hospital No. 1 (Yen Bai), Provincial General Hospital No. 2 (Lao Cai) are modernly designed to serve high-quality medical examination and treatment.
Many new facilities will be built and put into use in the period 2020-2025: 07 old Lao Cai regional hospitals (Muong Khuong, Bao Thang, Van Ban, Bac Ha, Bao Yen, Bat Xat, Si Ma Cai); 05 regional medical centers (Bao Thang, Van Ban, Bac Ha, Bao Yen, 3 Bat Xat.
There are 12 projects to renovate and repair medical facilities (Yen Bai Traditional Medicine Hospital, Yen Bai Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, Mental Hospital, Nghia Lo, Yen Binh, Tran Yen, Van Yen Medical Centers); 31 KKKK and 319 medical stations, basic medical stations are solidly built. Total number of hospital beds (Hospitals and KKK): 6,802 (Public GB: 6,376; Private GB: 426), reaching 41.1 GB/10,000 people.
* Medical equipment
Medical equipment is invested and purchased from the following sources: ODA Project; 7-province Project; GAVI Project; HPET; Programs and projects for COVID-19 pandemic prevention, Socio-economic Recovery and Development Program and from the annual provincial budget.
Basic hospitals are equipped with equipment to carry out specialized tasks according to the division. Some modern equipment has been equipped for provincial hospitals such as magnetic resonance imaging system, CT scan; RT-PCR diagnostic system, artificial heart and lung, high pressure oxygen, digital angiography (DSA); linear cancer radiotherapy treatment system, equipment system for artificial insemination (IVF). 9/9 hospitals in the old Lao Cai area are equipped with 16-row 32-slice CT scanner system, 9/9 hospitals have hemodialysis system. Basic equipment such as X-ray machine, ultrasound, endoscopy, testing machine, endoscopic surgery system... have been equipped.
