Lao Cai Tourism: Breakthrough in the last 2 months of the year

A smart, safe, identity-rich, and tourist-friendly destination is the strong message that Lao Cai tourism is conveying after the challenges of natural disasters. With a series of unique cultural events and festivals at the end of the year, Lao Cai is determined to create an explosive push, breaking through to exceed the 2025 target.

Lao Cai province, after consolidation, possesses a national “treasure” - terraced fields with scale, stature, and high recognition in the domestic and international tourism market. The ripe rice season from September to October annually is determined as the golden opportunity for provincial tourism.

The golden season tourism is expected to bring a large number of visitors to Lao Cai tourism.

However, at this time of the year, the province suffered consecutive heavy rains due to the influence of storms and post-storm circulation; many tourism activities and events were forced to be postponed or stopped, causing the tourism market to be quiet.

Concerns about safety and inconvenient traffic conditions affected the psychology, causing many tourists to decide to postpone or cancel their travel plans at this time. Many tourism service businesses and establishments recorded a situation of tour and room cancellations.

The number of tourists coming to Lao Cai in the 2 months of September - October reached 1.1 million arrivals, revenue reached 4,271 billion VND. This figure is lower than half of the average of the first 8 months of 2025: 1 million arrivals and 3,400 billion VND per month.

With the determination to complete and exceed the 2025 plan, the Lao Cai tourism industry, together with local authorities, businesses, and tourism service establishments, quickly deployed remedial and recovery measures.

Immediately after the natural disaster, the province mobilized maximum resources to fix landslide points, clear traffic routes, review and reassess the safety level at tourist destinations. Establishments proactively repaired, restored the landscape, and committed to ensuring absolute safety when welcoming visitors back.

Mr. Bui Dinh Son - founder of To day Trekking shared: “Although it was in the peak trekking season when the recent natural disaster occurred, we stopped organizing trekking tours and refunded deposits to customers or reserved deposits if tourists wanted to reschedule. More than 2 weeks after the storm, seeing stable weather and ensured safety, we started organizing tours again. Currently, on average of each week, the unit organizes about 3 trekking tours, each tour with 15 visitors. Every 2-3 visitors will have 1 porter for support. Moreover, Lung Cung is a location being chosen by many tourists because it is the season of red maple leaves, which is very worth experiencing”.

In addition, some establishments have offered discount packages of 5-10% for accommodation and dining services in the initial recovery phase. Many hotels link with transportation units and restaurants to create all-inclusive “travel combos” with more preferential prices, encouraging tourists to return. At the same time, committing to maintaining service quality and not increasing prices unreasonably during the peak period at the end of the year.

Many homestays are ready, committed not to increasing prices even in the peak season.

Mr. Lo Van Giap - owner of Giap Hoai Homestay, Van Chan commune said: When the weather turns colder, it is also when our hot mineral tourism products enter the peak tourism season. Specially, coming up, when the commune organizes the Shan Tuyet Tea Festival, the number of visitors flocking here will increase even more. We commit not to increase service prices, and at the same time, are ready to prepare accommodation, restaurant, and hot mineral bath services well to serve tourists.

Along with the proactiveness of businesses and tourism service establishments, Lao Cai province is also preparing good conditions to organize a series of unique cultural events and festivals in these last two months of the year.

Prominent are 4 elaborate art performance nights “Thieng” and “Moonlight Dance” performed consecutively on Friday and Saturday evenings for two consecutive weeks (November 7-8 and November 14-15) at San Quan, Sa Pa ward.

This is a large-scale art program, a combination of folk dances associated with the unique, rich cultural life and beliefs of the ethnic groups in Sa Pa and modern performance technologies such as lighting, stage installation, 3D mapping but still preserving indigenous culture.

Ms. Vu Thi Mai Oanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the province said: The series of year-end events will be an important “push”, not only attracting visitors but also conveying the message of intense vitality, safety, and friendliness of Lao Cai tourism. We expect the last two months of the year to achieve explosive visitor numbers and revenue, bringing Lao Cai tourism to not only reach but also exceed the 2025 plan target of welcoming over 10 million visitors, with revenue over 46,000 billion VND.

With all efforts, Lao Cai is opening its doors wide, ready to welcome and bring tourists wonderful and memorable winter experiences!
