Preserving and promoting national cultural identity in the school environment

In recent years, Bat Xat District Boarding Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities has implemented many extracurricular activities and established a hand embroidery club to attract students to participate. Thereby, contributing to preserving and promoting the cultural identity of ethnic groups in the district.

The Hand Embroidery Club of Bat Xat District Boarding Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities was established in the 2017-2018 academic year. In nearly 6 years, the Club has made many products, contributing to preserving and creating a unique identity for the school such as: class signs, bilingual calligraphy sets, classroom slogans..., etc., all of which were hand-embroidered by Club members entirely on brocade fabric.

Vui Luu Ha Phuong, a student of class 11A, Bat Xat District Boarding Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities, said: "I am very happy to join the school's Hand Embroidery Club. I started participating last year. Here, we can exchange and learn more about the traditional cultures of many other ethnic groups in the area through embroidery lessons, ways to decorate patterns on traditional costumes, ... thereby helping us preserve and develop the cultural beauty of our people."

Bat Xat District Boarding Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities has 488 students from 5 ethnic groups. To preserve the ethnic cultural identity of students, the school has established regulations requiring students to wear traditional costumes on the first day of the week and on local and national holidays, which helps them feel more proud of their ethnic identity. Along with that, promoting propaganda to raise awareness for teachers and students about the role, meaning and importance of ethnic cultural education activities as well as organizing many activities: extracurricular activities, flag-raising activities to help students become more aware of their ethnic culture, creating playgrounds, building a friendly and healthy educational environment. The school also integrates local education programs into each subject. During events and festivals, the school has organized for students in the Club to participate in fairs to introduce handicraft products at cultural fairs of the province and of the district, Sa Pa town.


The club focuses on extracurricular activities.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen - Head of the Hand Embroidery Club said: "The club has a number of products that have won high prizes in creative competitions in the Education and Training sector; becoming a useful playground, contributing to preserving the national cultural identity, while creating a unique identity for the school. Notably, in 2023, the brocade embroidery painting "Highland School", a special product of the Bat Xat District Boarding Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities, Lao Cai Province, was awarded a Vietnam Record Certificate by the Vietnam Record Organization for the largest brocade embroidery painting made by female high school students".

Because they are in the dormitory, the Club members often participate in embroidery activities during their spare time every day of the week from Monday to Sunday in the embroidery room. The Club will gather once a week during extracurricular hours. The Club will have a Board of Directors, which will be headed by female students from grades 10 to 12. Teachers will be in charge of instructing students in embroidery techniques and ethnic brocade patterns.


Hand embroidered products are loved by many people.

The products are displayed and introduced to domestic and foreign tourists through cultural fairs and handicraft fairs. Usually, depending on the difficulty and high technique of each product, they will be sold at prices ranging from 300,000 VND to 400,000 VND/product with dimensions of 30cm x 40cm. Larger products will have higher prices.

Mr. Le Huy Phu, Principal of the school said: "Preserving national cultural values is always considered a key task of the school, because through practical experience activities, students can learn and interact with each other, and have the opportunity to express themselves and be proud of the beauty of their local and ethnic culture. This helps them to be more confident in communication and promote their strengths in the new era."

The work of preserving and maintaining culture is being promoted by the locality, associated with many fields, in many different environments. The hand embroidery club was established with the aim of implementing a multicultural school model associated with the community. Contributing to preserving and promoting the traditional brocade embroidery art of the Mong, Dao, and Giay ethnic groups. Orienting the development of students' strengths and career orientation for students in the future.

Maintaining extracurricular activities and establishing hand embroidery clubs at the Bat Xat District Boarding Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities has created a new learning environment, helping ethnic students preserve their ethnic cultural identity, so that they can cultivate their personality, be responsible for their family and homeland; promote cultural values, and promote the spiritual strength of the community.
